ECOWAS Volunteer Programme (EVP) Assignment For Sierra Leone Job Vacancies - 20 Positions


In line with its vision 2020, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has taken steps towards setting up a Volunteers Programme to cut across all areas/sectors of activities of the ECOWAS Commission and its sister Institutions.

ECOWAS Volunteers are a group of volunteers’ men and women (18 to 35 years) from ECOWAS countries, with the capacity to adapt to different social, cultural and political circumstances. They are deployed in selected c non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and national government institutions. The Program covers three countries for the pilot phase, namely Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. In these countries, volunteerism, particularly youth volunteerism is being used to promote development, peace and regional integration.

Host Agency/Institution: The final host institutions will be determined by Ministry of Health and Sanitation of Sierra Leone

EVP Assignment Title: Medical Personnel (20 posts)

The actual positions are as follows:

Doctors, Obstetricians, Paediatricians - 18

Intensive Care Unit Nurses - 2

Duration of Assignment: 12 months

Expected Starting Date: 1st June 2013

Location: Country: Various, Sierra Leone

Type of contract: ECOWAS Volunteers


1. Profile of Doctors Needed under ECOWAS Volunteers Programme (for Sierra Leone)
Age: 25 years and above
Must have a Membership Fellowship degree from the relevant West African College or its equivalent (e.g. M. Med, FRCP, FRCS, PhD)
Must be able to register with the Medical and Dental Council of Sierra Leone.
Must have worked for at least two (2) years after obtaining post graduate qualification.
Responsibilities
To give professional support to junior and senior colleagues.
Lead a team of Medical Officers in providing specialist care.
Must be involved in under-graduate and postgraduate training of health workers
Any other duties that may be assigned by a senior officer.
Requirements
Able to perform all competencies of a specialist listed under the scheme of service
Able to display high level of organizational planning and service management skills
Able to advice on, plan, develop and evaluate appropriate programs or services that provide a continuum of care to the population
Able to use skills such as team building, negotiation, conflict management and group facilitation to build effective partnerships with key institutions and players.

2. Profile of Nurses Needed under ECOWAS Volunteers Programme (For Sierra Leone)
Age: 25 years and above
Must have a Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma in Intensive Care nursing from the West African College of Nursing or its equivalent
Must be able to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Sierra Leone.
Must have worked for at least two (2) years after obtaining postgraduate qualification.

Responsibilities
  • To give professional support to junior and senior colleagues.
  • Lead a team of Nurses in providing specialist care.
  • Must be involved in under-graduate training of nurses
  • Any other duties that may be assigned by a senior officer.
  • Requirements

  • Living Conditions 
  • Sierra Leone is a growing post-conflict country with a desire to improve its social and economic institutions. The Ministry of Health and Sanitation and the host institutions will assist the volunteers to integrate into the communities and will provide appropriate accommodation facilities.


Conditions of Services 
A one year contract with the possibility of one year extension.

Remuneration
A modest living allowance of $605 will be paid monthly to the volunteers plus a full insurance cover (life and health), At the beginning of the assignment, a settling-in grant will be paid and a resettlement grant will be provided at the end of the assignment. Air transport from (and to) home country to the duty station is provided.
